Our Approach to Drywall Repair

Nail pops, doorknob holes, settling cracks, water stains. Philadelphia rowhomes generate drywall damage on schedule, and paint alone won't hide any of it. A good repair disappears. A bad one telegraphs through every coat you put over it.

We cut out or patch the damage, skim-coat in layers, and sand to match the surrounding surface, including texture if your walls have one. Skim-coating is what separates a repair that vanishes from one you can find in raking light: thin passes of compound, each feathered wider than the last, sanded flat so there's no ridge or dish where the patch meets the wall. Get that wrong and every gap in the sun's angle shows the outline. Get it right and the wall reads as one flat plane again.

On older homes we repair plaster too, which matters in a city where half the housing stock predates drywall entirely. Plaster is a different animal. It cracks along lath lines, comes loose from its backing, and can't be patched the way modern drywall is, so we key it back down and rebuild the surface rather than just filling the crack, which would only reopen a season later. A lot of the cracks we see aren't a defect at all: they're the house settling, which old rowhomes and trinities do continuously, and the fix has to account for a wall that's still going to move.

Water damage is its own job. A stain isn't just discoloration, it's a sign moisture got in, and the drywall underneath is often soft or crumbling. We cut back to sound material, address anything still visibly wet, then seal the area with a stain-blocking primer so the old mark never bleeds back through your new paint. Skip that primer and the ghost of the stain returns within weeks no matter how many coats go over it. If a leak came from a failed exterior joint, that's a conversation for the estimate so you're not patching the same ceiling twice.
